What are Ocular Prostheses?

It is an implant that fills the space left after surgery, resulting from trauma or the patient’s illness. The ocular prostheses totally or partially help the existing ocular asymmetry and maintain the normal physiology of the eyelids and tears.

Main objectives and advantages of ocular prostheses

The main objective of ocular prostheses is to provide comfort and a balanced appearance to the patient’s face. It is an essential product for the patient’s personal and social acceptance, helping with their physical and mental well-being.

Composition of the ocular prostheses

Modern ocular prostheses are no longer made of glass. Instead, acrylic prostheses are made from a hypoallergenic resin with good tolerance. These prostheses are much more resistant and customizable and are made to adapt perfectly to the orbital cavity. A thin, curved and shiny acrylic disk, made to look like a natural eye – complete with iris, pupil, white and even blood vessels – is placed on the implant. The disk can be removed, cleaned and replaced when necessary

Ocular Prostheses Maintenance

Maintaining an ocular prostheses requires minimal but regular care, including monthly removal of the prostheses to prevent protein deposits from adhering to the surface. The use of specific cleaning products and lubricating oils is recommended.
